For sending data in industrial enviroment, RS-485 seems more common than RS-232 that is commonly available in your PC.
So, a signal / level converter is required to convert between RS-232 and RS-485.
Converting RS-232 to TTL is done by special IC MAX-232 while converting TTL to RS-485 is done by MAX-485. Together, they will do conversion between RS-232 to RS-485.
